How do I declare AI use in my submission?

If your unit requires an AI-use declaration, you complete it as part of submitting your assignment. This takes about two minutes.

Steps

  1. Open the assignment and select Submit.
  2. On the declaration screen, choose the statement that matches what you did:
    • I did not use AI tools for this task.
    • I used AI tools as permitted for this task — a text box will appear.
  3. If a text box appears, describe your use in one or two specific sentences: the tool, what you used it for, and what remained your own work.
  4. Select Confirm declaration, then complete your submission as normal.

What to write in the text box

Be specific and brief. For example:

I used ChatGPT to suggest an essay outline. I wrote all submitted text myself.

Frequently asked questions

Can I edit my declaration after submitting? Before the due date, yes: reopen the submission and choose Edit declaration. After the due date, contact your unit coordinator.

What if I’m not sure whether my use was permitted? Check the assessment instructions in your unit outline. If they don’t answer it, ask your unit coordinator before submitting.

Will declaring AI use lower my mark? Declared use that the task permits is not penalised. Declarations exist so your marker understands how the work was produced.
